Becoming a WCIT 2008 Volunteer
What is WCIT?
WCIT is the acronym for the World Congress on Information Technology. Often referred to as the “Olympics of the ICT world”, WCIT is held once every two years in a different continent. WCIT is the signature forum of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), a consortium of 73 industry associations that represents over 90% of the world’s ICT market. The 16th edition of WCIT or WCIT 2008 will be held in Kuala Lumpur on May 18-22, 2008.
What’s a WCIT 2008 volunteer and how will I know if I am eligible to be one?
A WCIT 2008 volunteer is an individual who is willing to commit time and effort to the WCIT 2008 event. To be eligible as a volunteer, the candidate must:

be at least 18 years of age

reside in Malaysia

be fluent in English

commit fulltime to the required working hours (during the event week)

attend all training sessions and briefings

undertake given tasks and duties in a diligent manner

be energetic, flexible and have a pleasant personality.

be willing to serve with a smile
How do I register to be to be a volunteer?
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer has to complete and submit the on-line volunteer registration form. We will review the applications and notify short-listed candidates for an interview. Details are available on our website at www.wcit2008.org.
How will I know if I have succeeded to become a volunteer?
You will be informed of the decision after the interview. If you fulfill the eligibility criteria specified and have the qualities and commitment we are looking for, you will be selected as a WCIT 2008 volunteer.
When will registration for volunteers be closed?
Volunteer registration has been extended till Mar 31, 2008. Interviews and recruitment will be carried out once your registration form is received.
How many volunteers are WCIT 2008 looking for and what types of duties would I undertake as a volunteer?
We are looking for 300 volunteers in many areas. Broadly, they include the following:

Administrative, Registration & Helpdesk

Airport/Hotel Support

On-site Event Logistics (at KL Convention Centre)

Media Centre
-
Hosting and Ushering
-
Ancillary Activities (i.e. Golf Tournament, Spouse Program, City Tour).
Based on your area of interest, strength and competency, we will determine which role would best suit you. However, depending on circumstances, you may be required to multi-task and/or undertake other roles and functions as well.
Do I need to have prior experience as a volunteer?
Having prior experience as a volunteer would certainly be an advantage. However, even if you have never volunteered before, WCIT 2008 will provide you with a great opportunity to gain valuable experience and training to prepare yourself for the future. We strive to make the experience of volunteering for WCIT 2008 as accessible as possible to all.
Will there be any training provided for volunteers?
Yes, basic training over a period of 1-2 days will be provided to all volunteers. Among others, the training will focus on your roles and responsibilities, social etiquette and self image, communication skills, leadership qualities and protocol matters. We are targeting for the training to be conducted sometime in April 2008. The training schedule will be informed to you in advanced. Several briefing sessions will also be held closer to the event. Attendance for the training and briefing sessions is mandatory.
When do I have to be available for WCIT 2008?
WCIT 2008 will be held on May 18-22, 2008. However, volunteers are required to be available on May 14-24, 2008 as there would be pre- and post-event duties to perform. A compulsory training session will also be held for all volunteers in April 2008. The duration for volunteer services will depend on the tasks and duties to be undertaken as well as availability of the volunteer. Typically, we are looking at an 8-12 hour day during the week of the WCIT 2008 event. Some volunteers may be required to undertake certain tasks before and after the event.
Will there be an allowance given to volunteers?
Volunteers will be provided with RM80 per day for the period of their engagement. However, they will be responsible for their own transportation and accommodation. Allowances will be paid after the event is completed based on the volunteer’s attendance for training and number of work days.
How will the volunteers be contacted?
Volunteers are also required to have an email account and expected to have their own mobile phones to be informed of schedules and updates.
How will I benefit as a volunteer for WCIT 2008?
Volunteering for WCIT 2008 will give you the opportunity to network and make new friends whilst working together on a globally-renowned event. It will also provide you with the chance to mingle and be amongst the leading thinkers and shapers of the ICT world. Volunteering for WCIT 2008 will provide you with a platform to demonstrate your leadership skills, knowledge and ability to work in a team. These qualities would be beneficial for your personal development and future endeavors. Volunteers can also claim to be an integral part of a landmark ICT event that is held for the first time in Southeast Asia. A personalized certificate of appreciation will be given to each volunteer at the end of the event for the hard work and commitment put in to make the WCIT 2008 a resounding success.
